St. John’s United Church of Christ –Sheboygan, WI Baptism Information & Form
On behalf of the whole church—past, present, and future—we at St. John’s United Church of Christ are delighted that you are considering Baptism for your child. We warmly welcome you and your family and look forward to celebrating this meaningful and joyful moment together.
Baptism is a sacred and beautiful act shared between God, your child, your family, and the church. In the Protestant tradition, we affirm that every child is created good and beloved by God. Baptism is not about removing something negative, but about celebrating God’s grace already at work in your child’s life.
In Baptism, your child is claimed by God and welcomed into the life of the Church. It is an outward and visible sign of God’s grace, marking the beginning of your child’s lifelong journey of faith. Through water and the Holy Spirit, your child is embraced into the care of Christ’s Church, invited into God’s forgiveness, and nurtured toward a life of faith, love, and discipleship.
As parents, you are not alone in this journey. The congregation of St. John’s promises to support you and your child as you grow together in faith. Because the whole church shares in this commitment, Baptism takes place during a worship service, in the presence of the gathered community. For this reason, we do not offer private baptisms.
As you present your child for Baptism, you will be asked to make the following promises before God and the congregation:
Do you desire to have your child baptized into the faith and family of Jesus Christ?
Will you encourage this child to renounce the powers of evil and to receive the freedom of new life in Christ?
Will you teach this child so that they may one day profess Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior?
Do you promise, by the grace of God, to be Christ’s disciples—following in the way of love, resisting oppression and evil, and bearing witness to the work and word of Jesus Christ as best you are able?
Do you promise to grow with this child in the Christian faith, helping them to become a faithful member of the Church—celebrating Christ’s presence, participating in Christ’s mission, and nurturing them toward the day they may affirm their faith at Confirmation?
These vows are part of the United Church of Christ’s baptismal tradition and are asked of every parent seeking Baptism for their child. As ministers of this sacrament, we are committed to honoring it with care and integrity. We invite you to thoughtfully consider these promises and discern whether you are ready to make them.
If you feel prepared to make these commitments, we would be honored to celebrate your child’s Baptism. If not, we would be glad to offer a service of blessing for your child at a mutually convenient time.
